The Orchards philosophy of care
The Orchards is a recovery unit for adults who experience mental ill-health. We aim to help you to manage and recover from your experiences of mental ill-health.
Our ambition is to provide you with the skills to:
- positively manage your health and wellbeing journey
- connect with your values and strengths
- build sustainable relationships.
- enhance your life skills
- engage in activities that improve self-esteem, promote community participation and contribute to your wellbeing
- help gain greater independence and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Accommodation
The unit has:
- nine en-suite bedrooms for longer term use
- each bedroom has a lockable drawer and personal safe for storing your valuables
- more secure storage facilities are available if needed.
Staff
- The Orchards is staffed twenty four hours a day by nursing staff
- The following staff also support the unit:
- a highly specialist applied psychologist
- occupational therapist
- technical instructor
- consultant
- professionals from other agencies.
Becoming an Orchards patient
Following referral you will be invited to the unit for a short assessment period.
If it is decided that The Orchards is a suitable place for you to receive care, you will be allocated a named nurse (who will act as your care co-ordinator) and co-worker.
Therapeutic activities
Occupational therapy staff will meet with you to discuss which activities will benefit you the most.
These may be individual or group therapies, in our outside the unit.
We have close links with social organisations in the community and with an employment officer.
There is a wide range of shops nearby and the town centre is within walking distance.
There is regular public transport.
Support with vocational skills and volunteering opportunities is provided.
Domestic arrangements
You are expected and encouraged to contribute to the running of the unit by:
- taking responsibility for keeping your room clean and tidy
- attending to your personal hygiene
- attending to your laundry.
You will also be involved in domestic activities including:
- shopping for yourself and the unit
- cooking for yourself and the unit
- personal budgeting.
Visiting
We welcome open visiting for family and friends during reasonable hours. All visits are at the discretion of the nurse in charge.
Please be aware that the Trust operates a child visiting policy that applies to children up to the age of 18 years. All visits by children must be pre-arranged with unit staff and a responsible adult should accompany children who are visiting.
Smoke free policy
Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust is a smokefree Trust. This means smoking will not be permitted anywhere on Trust premises, including the grounds. For more information, please ask a member of staff.
Smoking cessation is available for patients who want to give up smoking whilst at The Orchards. Please speak to your named nurse for advice.
Moving on
To make your transition into the community as smooth as possible, unit staff will work closely with you, your carers and community agencies and these can include accommodation officers, community mental health teams and advocacy services.
