We are a specialist team assisting mental health in acute hospitals offering support for patients, families, carers and staff.
Your mental health is important, research has shown that mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, alcohol and memory problems are often not recognised or treated.
Untreated mental health issues can lead to both your mental and physical health suffering and this could result in a longer hospital stay.
What is the acute hospital liaison team?
We are a team made up of a group of experienced psychiatrists and psychiatric liaison nurses.
We are available every day from 8am to 8pm and are on hand all year round including all bank holidays. The liaison team at Scarborough is available from 10am to 7pm, Monday to Friday.
Why are we here?
We work with health care staff in acute hospitals to provide assessment, treatment, advice and support for patients with actual or suspected mental health problems.
Who uses our service?
The Acute Hospital Liaison Team is for people aged 16 years and over, experiencing mental health issues and is for patients who are having treatment in the general hospital wards or who come into the accident and emergency department.
How will you access our service?
After a discussion with you, the acute hospital health care staff treating you may seek our advice to help with your further treatment and/or discharge planning, so they will make a referral to us on your behalf and with your consent.
What you can expect?
- if you are in agreement to a referral to us, your family can be with you during the assessment and be kept informed of the outcome
- by listening to you we hope to complete a full assessment of your mental health needs and create a plan that will help you address these. It is important that you give us as much information as possible
- all sensitive information will stay confidential. Under certain circumstances, for example if there are overriding concerns for your welfare or that of others, your information may be shared with other professional services
- you will be given a clear, written explanation of what is going to happen
- to be treated with respect and dignity at all times.
The views of both you and your family/carer are important to us and will be taken into account when care plans are agreed. We may help to arrange community follow-up after your hospital discharge. When you are discharged from hospital we will inform your GP that the Acute Hospital Liaison Team has been involved in your care.
To ensure we provide you with a high quality of care we will routinely ask you to complete a simple feedback form or you can contact; Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) Monday to Friday between 9am and 4pm by:
