About the team
Registered dietitians are qualified health professionals who assess, diagnose and treat diet-related and nutritional problems. Dietitians interpret the science of nutrition, aiming to improve health and treat conditions by educating and giving practical advice. Dietitians work with a variety of people in a variety of settings, using the most up-to-date, evidence-based information on food, health and disease which they translate into practical guidance to enable people to make appropriate lifestyle and food choices.
Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust have an established team of registered dietitians, nutritionists and associate practitioners / dietetic assistants working in a number of clinical areas throughout Teesside, Darlington, County Durham, North Yorkshire and York. What is a dietitian?
What we do
Dietitians work closely with each individual in need of dietetic support and also work closely with the multidisciplinary team, families and carers, outside agencies, catering services, pharmacy and many other teams, colleagues and services within the trust. Our health professionals:
- Use expert knowledge and skills to translate evidence into practice, and deliver patient-centred and practical dietetic interventions
- Utilise behaviour change techniques, mindfulness, motivational interviewing and experience to provide nutritional interventions supporting people to engage in regular and healthy patterns and challenge delusional beliefs to aid physical and mental health
- Have an important role in advising catering teams, menu design, and policy and pathway development
- Coordinate specialised feeding regimes for patients who are identified as being at risk of refeeding syndrome
- Prescribe enteral feeds and oral nutritional supplements
- Lead on the whole systems approach to the management of overweight and obesity
- Contribute to dietetic student training (teaching and placement facilitation).
We’re part of a regional weight management plan ‘A Weight Off Your Mind’ which aims to address the weight management needs of people with mental illness and/or learning disabilities in our care. We recognise this is a health inequality issue and we want to bring the physical health, life expectancy and quality of life of our service users in line with those of the general population.

Dietitians work within a number of different areas within the trust:
- Adult mental health (AMH)
- Children and young people’s services (CYPS)
- Adult eating disorders (AED)
- Adult learning disabilities (ALD)
- Mental health services for older people (MHSOP)
- Secure inpatient services (SIS)
- Health and Care Professions council (HCPC)

Dietitians have a responsibility to act in a professional and ethical manner. The British Dietetic Association’s Code of Professional Conduct provides a framework to ensure the accountability of dietitians who work in the interest of public safety at all times.
