Advisory teachers play an important part in assessing and supporting children and young people in the school setting.
Firstly, a school observation/assessment will be carried out where information is gathered from school. This information will be shared with other professionals and yourself at a meeting in CAMHS.
Following diagnosis, a feedback to school meeting will be coordinated where training, support and strategies can be given to school staff including your school SENCO (special educational needs coordinator) to enable your child to reach their full potential.
Top tips to help with homework
- Be aware that homework may be a tricky task in your home
- Encourage your child/young person to attend homework club to finish homework, where offered
- Ensure a homework diary is used in an appropriate way or use email to clarify homework requirements with teachers, where possible
- Use highlighter pens and post it notes to help your child/young person to pick out key words and information
- Use charts and mind mapping (Google: Tony Buzan) to help your child/young person to understand and revise topics
- Reduce homework tasks to only that which is essential
- Find ways to reduce writing requirements, for example use a computer or dictaphone
- Encourage your child/young person to share information with others
- Take short regular breaks during tasks (work for just 10-15 minute slots then have a break – use a timer)
- ENJOY! Make homework a rewarding experience.
- You might build in rewards such as watching a favourite TV programme, allow extra computer time or a healthy snack.
