About our service
The York and Selby early intervention in psychosis team supports people aged 14 – 65 years old and living in York, Selby, Easingwold and Tadcaster who are experiencing a first episode of psychosis.
People experiencing psychosis may be experiencing things that they are struggling to make sense of or they may feel that they are not their usual self; we are here to listen, hear their concerns and offer practical support.
Referrals to our service
Referrals to our service can be made by a GP, a community mental health team or an inpatient service, or by self-referral.
What happens after referral
Treatments and therapies offered
When we first meet people referred to us, we talk to them to find out how best we can help and support them. We also carry out an assessment to help us understand what they are experiencing.
We can have these talks wherever someone feels comfortable – at our base or at someone’s home and people are welcome to bring along a friend or family member to their sessions.
Through our talks we aim to get the right support in place to help people:
- understand their difficulties
- manage their mental health and wellbeing
- build up their own strengths and coping strategies.
We can help people:
- look at problem solving and how to reduce stress
- with practical, social or financial issues
- we can refer people to other services that can offer support including Mind or Converge
- by offering support through talking therapies
- by offering education about psychosis and medication
- by working with families – we run information sessions for families and carers
- by offering cognitive behaviour therapy
- by offering family work support.
We generally see people for up to three years and support the person experiencing psychosis as well as their family.
Care coordinator
When referred our service, you will be appointed a care coordinator who will be the main point of contact. Your care coordinator works with multi-professionals within and outside our team to ensure you receive the highest standard of care.
Family and friends
If you are concerned about someone we are seeing, please contact their care coordinator; if you friend or family member does not give consent for us to discuss information with you, their care coordinator will be limited in what he/she can share with you.
