Why we carry out searches at Ridgeway
It is necessary for staff to carry out searches of patients and the environment during your time at Ridgeway. Searching is carried out to maintain a safe environment and to preserve the integrity of the site for patients, staff and visitors.
What to expect during your stay/visit in Ridgeway
Certain items are prohibited within the service. Searches are carried out to make sure that prohibited items are not taken into/used in the unit.
Personal property allowed in the unit is determined by the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) on an individual basis, determined by individual risk. All patients will have an individualized risk assessment to determine if any searching is required or in what circumstances may necessitate
When a search is carried out you will be asked to go a specified area where you will be given the opportunity to declare any items. The procedure will be then explained to you and the search carried out.
Who will carry out searches?
Ridgeway and security staff carry out searches and are trained to do so. There will be at least two members of staff present during any procedure and the person carrying out the search will be the same gender as the patient.
Dignity and privacy
Staff will ask for your consent prior to any search of your room or property, if consent is not given and staff have reasonable cause to suspect prohibited items are within the area, a search can still be conducted and you will be asked if you want to be present.
Are the staff trained to do this?
Staff receive training to carry out searches.
