What is the carer education group?
When a family member is diagnosed with dementia it can be a very upsetting time and family life can be considerably disrupted. Carers may feel that they need information, advice and support.
The Bowes Lyon Unit regularly arranges a ‘Carers Education Group’ which consists of four weekly sessions, each session lasting approximately 1½ hours; which you and other members of your family/friends are welcome to attend.
The group provides an opportunity for you to raise any issues specific to your needs as well as to provide useful advice and information.
The group:
- is small and informal
- provides an opportunity to meet others in a relaxed and informal environment with opportunities for discussion throughout the programme.
If you would like to attend, please inform a member of the Bowes Lyon Unit staff.
Session one
The advanced nurse practitioner will explain:
- the “theory” of the different types of dementia
- our assessment process
- treatment options.
Session two
An occupational therapist and community nurse will:
- discuss coping and management strategies related to caring for someone with dementia
- provide other sources of information
Session three
- a welfare rights officer will talk about their services and the financial benefits that may be available to you.
- a social worker will talk about the services provided by social services.
Session four
The final session will provide information about the support and services provided by:
- Durham and Chester-le-street Alzheimer’s Society
- Durham County Carers Support
- Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, Patient and public involvement team.
